Hair Loss Causes & Treatments

Hair loss, or alopecia, comes in three basic varieties: non-scarring, scarring and alopecia areata.

Non-Scarring Alopecia

male-hair-lossThe vast majority of hair loss cases are a form of non-scarring alopecia. The classic case is that of a gradually receding or thinning hairline at the front of the scalp, the temples, and the crown of the head. This is due to a hormonal effect with the conversion of circulating testosterone to DHT, which binds to hair follicles and inhibits hair growth. This is known as androgenic alopecia.

A common medical therapy for androgenic alopecia is Propecia (finasteride), which helps prevent this hormonal effect. Unfortunately, many patients report side-effects, such as impotence or decreased libido, with finasteride. For those that tolerate the medication, it can be beneficial. Minoxidil (Rogaine) can also be used to increase nutrient delivery to the scalp.

At Neinstein Plastic Surgery, we have recently introduced the latest in painless and effective hair restoration—the LaseMD Ultra Laser with KeraFactor serum. This is particularly effective for non-scarring alopecias. This laser therapy stimulates the hair follicles in the scalp to promote hair growth. This works without the need for painful needlesticks, bruising, and variability between individuals as seen with other platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatments. This is effective in the vast majority of cases of early hair loss and can be used in combination with your existing medical therapy.

For those with advanced hair loss, we refer our patients to our colleagues who specialize in follicular unit extraction (FUE) hair transplantation. This is a proven, effective treatment for these patients. We reserve laser hair therapy for those with early-stage hair loss and thinning.

Scarring Alopecia

Scarring alopecia is caused by disorders which destroy the hair follicles and replace them with scar tissue. There are a variety of inflammatory disorders which cause this and are associated with redness, itching, changes in pigmentation, and scaling. Treatment often involves anti-inflammatory medications and antibiotics. These should be managed by your primary care physician or dermatologist. Laser hair therapy is not appropriate for these conditions.

Alopecia Areata

Alopecia areata is a form of autoimmune disease and often leads to hair loss in patches rather than the typical receding hairline. If you notice you are losing patches of hair, we recommend seeking medical therapy by first consulting your primary care provider. He or she will help determine the underlying medical issue and treat it accordingly. Laser hair therapy is not appropriate for these conditions.

More About LaseMD ULTRA Hair Restoration

LaseMD ULTRA is 66% more powerful than the typical Fraxel laser. It is used to make microscopic holes in the scalp.

The process is painless, and no topical numbing cream is required. Each session takes about 10 minutes. The scalp then acts like a sponge to absorb products for hair growth. Studies show that this laser therapy increases absorption up to 7 times.

To stimulate hair growth, we then apply a groundbreaking new product called KeraFactor. This serum is made up of growth factors similar to the stimulatory growth factors found in platelet-rich plasma (PRP).

However, unlike PRP, the scientists behind KeraFactor have amplified these stimulatory factors by 50 to 2000 percent. The factors are made synthetically and encapsulated within nanoliposomes to better penetrate the scalp.

Also, PRP has been found to contain several factors with are actually inhibitory for hair growth. These inhibitory factors are not contained in KeraFactor. Plus, new research shows that any aspirin and or nonsteroidal inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) ruin the efficacy of PRP, and that PRP quality may vary by the individual. By using KeraFactor, we eliminate this variability and give you the optimal treatment each time.

We believe this treatment will revolutionize the field of hair restoration. Say goodbye to needles, bruises, and poor quality PRP, and say hello to painless and effective hair growth.
