My Book Report on Growing Pains by Eric Flamholtz and Yvonne Randle
This book reminded me of the quote “As the Island of Knowledge grows, so do the shores of our ignorance”. It left me with more questions than answers but it gave me directionality to the questions.
While its easy to regurgitate the tactical and strategic lessons in the book, I have a few succinct and important take aways:
- Recognizing that transitioning from a mom and pop business to an enterprise is stressful and challenging is ok
- Systems and processes for every touch point is the DNA of the business and as much time and energy should be applied as the more seductive things like marketing
- Extra energy needs to be placed into personnel, specifically trying to align individual goals with that of the entity
- At the end of the day culture is the discerning factor that will give longevity to the practice and will outlast and outperform the best planned strategy or creative fancy marketing plan
