Tummy Tuck Recovery
Everything You Need to Know to Exchange Fear for Confidence
This story may sound familiar. You have three beautiful children who occupy most of your time. At the same time, you may be frustrated when you look in the mirror. Things do not look and feel the way they did before your pregnancies. When you put on formfitting clothes, you have to hold your breath in to keep your stomach flat or perhaps wear a number of garments or contraptions to hold things in.
The frustration and struggle you are feeling is normal and common. Pregnancies stretch skin, tear muscles, and stick on fat. You eat well and exercise but you just can’t seem to change it enough where you feel sexy and confident.
We want you to wear that bikini.
We want you to feel sexy on date night.
We want you to have no fear or frustration for any mirror.
You may have heard about tummy tucks but you may think:
- That sounds scary
- I don’t want a scar
- I really should not take time and resources away from my kids
- I don’t want a fake belly button
- Everyone says I don’t need it (side note: its for you not for them)
Let’s unravel a few myths about tummy tucks.
- Pain: When we put the muscles back together so your stomach does not bulge anymore its pretty sore. The game changer for this has been the use of a new numbing medication called Exparel. This numbs the muscles for 3 days which means less pain, and less downtime. After the numbing wears off most people take Percocet for another 2 days, then switch to Tylenol. We have solved the pain problem – we got this.
- Scars: My philosophy is that the results should justify the means. This means we will get you the results you desire and we will make the scar as long as it has to be and as short as it can be. I make the scar low and we use tiny little meticulous sutures. 6 months to a year with our scar care it should be a faint line that you can’t see. I have never seen a mom 6 months later care about the scar when she is contoured and sexy again.
- Exercise: My patients are like me, that’s why we get along so well. We read similar books, our kids are similar ages, we have the same goals and aspirations in life. Also, they love to exercise just like me. At two weeks I want people to start light exercise which means walking on treadmill, gentle riding on bike, 1-3lb ankle weights for leg exercises and 2-5lb weights for arms. I don’t like the core engaged for about 6 weeks but hey, the muscle reconstruction is like doing a million sit ups so don’t worry.
- Who is going to take care of my kids? I let patients pick up young children in one week, not the old “you can’t pick up your kids for 6 weeks” so you for sure need someone else to be the primary care giver for one week.
- Who is going to take care of me? I understand, you are the one who takes care of everyone else, so now it’s time for you. For the first night at least, our patients stay at one of our partner hotels with a private nurse. Many patients will stay anywhere from one night to ten nights, depending on how far they travel. Our team coordinates all the details about dressings, food, medications, and drains so you can focus on yourself for once (don’t worry, you will be back to looking after your kids and running around in no time).
- Work: What is interesting is if you can work remotely there is almost no downtime, but I do suggest patients wait 10 days before going back to the office.
- Garments: The body wants to swell after surgery so we ask our patients to wear a sequence of garments and waist cinchers over 6 weeks. Our dedicated nursing team will walk you through it and this helps guide the body in its healing journey.
